Virginia Snell Austin, affectionately known as "Lady", age 100 and 10 months, died at her home in Murfreesboro Sunday, October 15, 2017 surrounded by her children and grandchildren. A life-long resident of Murfreesboro she was a graduate of Central High School and attended MTSU. She was a member of the Kingwood Heights Church of Christ and was active in the Stones River Manor Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Austin retired as a Civil Service employee in the ROTC department at MTSU.
She was a daughter of the late Francis Marion Snell and Mattie L. Jernigan Snell and was preceded in death by her husband, Benjamin Edison Austin; a brother, Hubert Snell; a sister, Lucille Allen and a grandson, James Brothers Coleman.
Mrs. Austin is survived by her children, Ben S. Austin and wife Diane, Ann Coleman, Dan Austin and wife Alicia, Mary Dunavant and husband Larry (Scotts Hill, Tennessee), and Philip Austin; grandchildren, Dr. Andrew Austin and wife Mona (Green Bay, Wisconsin), Susie Austin, Joseph Austin (Nashville), Daniel Austin, Thadd Austin and wife Marnie (Huntsville, Alabama), Laura Golden and husband Chad, Kristin Elizabeth McCann (Nashville), David Coleman and wife Kathy, Jonathan Dunavant and wife Cindy (Lexington, Kentucky), Dr. Ann Elizabeth Ingram and husband Joseph (Lexington, Kentucky), Seth Dunavant (Winsted, Connecticut); additionally, she is survived by 13 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Sneed.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 19, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services beginning at 2:00 p.m. at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Ben Austin officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with David Coleman, Philip Austin, Thadd Austin, Jon Dunavant, Sam Glass, Jack Dunavant and Caroline Coleman serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Andy Austin, Chad Golden, and Joseph Ingram.
The family requests memorials be made in memory of Mrs. Austin to the Ladies Auxillary of the Stones River Manor. An online guestbook is available for the Austin family at www.woodfinchapel.com.
