Worthington
August 3, 1929 – June 30, 2016
Mr. Thomas W. Worthington, age 86, of Beech Grove, TN passed away Thursday, June 30, 2016 surrounded by his family. He was from Cleveland, MS and was the son of the late George Isaac and Mable Williford Worthington.
Mr. Worthington is survived by his wife Mariann Moorer Worthington; daughters, Suzie W. Walters and her husband Kevin of Starkville, MS, Elizabeth W. Nichols and her husband Jack of Murfreesboro, TN; and Lucie W. Gory and her husband Bruce of Trussville, AL; and five grandchildren, Web Walters and Clayton Walters and his wife Emily, Adam Alsup, and Ike and Madeline Smith.
Mr. Worthington graduated from Mississippi State University in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was very involved in numerous activities where he was the Vice President of American Society of Civil Engineers, MSU Track Team, Sigma Chi fraternity, and Distinguished Military Graduate. Mr. Worthington was commissioned in the United States Army at the age of 20 during the Korean War. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in command of a 90mm Anti-Aircraft Gun Battery in the 67th Battalion, 7th Army. After his military service, Mr. Worthington began his career working for M and W Construction in Tupelo, MS. He later moved to Murfreesboro where he owned and operated Worthington Construction Company for 32 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Murfreesboro where he served as a Deacon and an Elder before transferring his membership to Beech Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was involved in local and state politics and served on the Rutherford County Industrial Bond Board. He was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Central Bank. He was a devoted supporter of Mississippi State University in many different capacities – Alumni Association, MSU Foundation, Bulldog Club, and various committees. He was a staunch conservative and patriot and maintained an avid interest in reading, especially military history.
He was a man of honor, integrity, faith and family. He will be remembered as a man true to his principles. Throughout his life, his love, sense of humor and great compassion for his fellow man brought joy to those around him.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at 2:00pm at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Visitation with the family will be from 12:00noon until time of service Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Dr. John Vile will officiate. Burial will be at Beech Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
