Sue Anthum Barrett McElroy, the last surviving of her six siblings, was 85 years old when she passed away quietly on Saturday evening, April 16, 2016.
She and the late Joe Dennis McElroy had been happily married 61 years when he died on September 24, 2013. They raised four daughters in their Pitts Lane home, and spent the last seven years of her life at Stones River Manor.
Sue McElroy was born in Cannon County and was raised in Murfreesboro where she attended the old Training School, part of MTSC. She met Joe McElroy while working at Stickney & Griffis Drug Store on the square. She was a "soda jerk," working the lunch counter and dipping Sealtest ice cream. She worked there with her sisters, Wylie and Grace, and with other life-long friends: Betty Pate, Eleanor Winn Seat, Ruth Dunnaway, and Jewell Wilson.
As a young couple, Sue and Joe moved for a number of years according to Joe's orders as an Army officer, but they returned and lived for the next fifty years in the house that they built on Pitts Lane in Murfreesboro. She was a member of Lascassas Church of Christ.
In the summer they enjoyed Braves baseball and in the winter they watched the Lady Vols. She was always surrounded by her flowers.
She was "Mama" to her four daughters: Elaine (Joe) Thomson, Joan (Thomas) Darnell, Phyllis (Philip) Thurman, and Linda (Darryl) Elrod. She will always be known as "Nannie" by her seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: Jay Thomson, Daniel (Sara) Elrod, Kayla (Aaron) Tresnak, Noah (Lynn) Darnell, Hailey Anthum Darnell, Adam Barrett Elrod, Kathleen (Braden) Hunsicker, Brandon and Camden Thomson, and Caety Anne and Dennis McElroy Elrod. She also treasured her special caregivers: Sarah, Salome, and Safina.
Mrs. McElroy is preceded in death by her parents Edd Clark and Hettie Lee Markum Barrett; her brothers Robert, Ed, and Joe Barrett; and her sisters Christine Patterson, Grace Finley, and Wylie Barnes.
Pallbearers will be Mrs. McElroy's grandsons and great-grandsons.
Visitation will be T uesday, April 19 from 4-8pm and her funeral service will be Wednesday, Apr il 20 at 2pm at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. Burial will follow in Milton Cemetery. An online guestbook is available for Mrs. McElroy at www.woodfinchapel.com6
