Samuel "Sam" Augusta Truitt, Jr

Samuel Augusta Truitt, Jr., passed away in Murfreesboro, TN, on August 10, 2026, from pneumonia. Born in Greensboro, NC, on July 15, 1944, he was the son of Ruby Caroline Glass and Samuel Augusta Truitt, Sr. A hard-working student who loved learning, he was valedictorian of his class at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, NC, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

In the summer of 1970, he received his PhD in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill, married his Carolina classmate, Sandra Regionale, and moved to Murfreesboro where he joined the Mathematics faculty at Middle Tennessee State University. He taught at MTSU for 34 years, retiring as a full professor in 2004.

Sam walked everywhere - the fields near his childhood home in Greensboro, the route between his house and MTSU - which he walked every single workday for 34 years, the trails of the Civil War battlefields he loved to visit and photograph, the streets of his Tyne Avenue neighborhood, the trails of the Murfreesboro Greenway. A person with many interests, he loved history, loved learning foreign languages - enthusiastically embracing the Italian of his in-laws, and loved drawing comic pictures. But most of all, he loved his books, of which he had a great many!

He was a shy, quiet person, but his wife, who survives him, knew him to be sweet and wise and funny - a beautiful human being. He will be sorely missed.

Services will be held at a later date.
