Obituary

Dr. Samuel Hutson Hay Sr., age 96, passed away on the 15th day of February, 2011 at Crestwood Hospital in Huntsville, Ala. Dr. Hay was born August 13, 1914 in Murfreesboro to the parents of Samuel Hutson Hay and Mary Ordway Hay. He was preceded in death by his wife Katheryn Sidney Chambers Hay, and a daughter, Sarah Louisa Hay Hyde. Dr. Hay was affectingly known by his family and many friends as Granddaddy Hay. He is survived by his son, Dr. Samuel H. Hay Jr. of Huntsville, Ala. and two daughters, Mary Corinne Hay Jones of Lascassas and Katheryn Hay Hutcheson of Franklin and thirteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Dr. Hay granduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1935 where he was voted the Best All Around Student. Dr. Hay received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University in 1940 and entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and in 1946 was honorably discharged as a Major. While in the service he was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon. He received a Fellowship in Radiology from the Mayo Clinic. In 1950, Dr. Hay returned to Murfreesboro to private practice. He was a Recognized-Diplomat of the American College of Radiology, President of the Rutherford County Medical Society and was former President of the Hospital Staff at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. He had served as the Vice President of the Tennessee Medical Society, President of the Tennessee Radiological Society and President of the East Tennessee Radiological Society. He was a member of the Radiological Society of North America. He continued his medical education classes at Vanderbilt Medical School one day a week for four years learning new disciplines in radiology, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CAT scanning and interventional proceedings. In 1981 he completed the Preceptorship Program in Nuclear Medicine at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Hay was an ardent believer in exercise and received many belts in Karate. His life long love of the Lord is reflected in his philosophy of helping his fellow humans get through this life as happily as possible. Dr. Hay was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Murfreesboro, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and an Elder. For the past five years Dr. Hay had lived in a retirement home in Huntsville, Ala. near his son Sam. Visitation will be Friday from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM at Evergreen Cemetery. Rev. John Hinkle will officiate. His family will serve as pallbearers.
