Mrs. Ruth Ellen Mullins, age 87, of Murfreesboro, TN passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2019. She was born in Biddeford, Maine to the late Horace and Marion Sawyer. Mrs. Mullins was also preceded in death by her first husband of 7 years, Larry Hooper; second husband of 51 years, Charles Fredrick Mullins, Sr.; and brother, George Sawyer.
Mrs. Mullins is survived by her five children, Sandra Elaine Hooper of Palm Beach, FL, Patty Hooper Harley of Cullowhee, NC, Karen Michelle Mullins of Murfreesboro, TN, Deborah Lynn Mullins of Bel Air, MD, and Charles Fredrick Mullins Jr. and his wife Gillean of Joppatowne, MD; eleven grandchildren, Travis, Amanda, Stephanie, Shilo, Carter, Kendall, Patrick, Charlie, Michael, Sammy, and Lexy; and eight great-grandchildren, Donovan, Alani, Layla, Valencia, Finn, Annabelle, Cortez, and Cecilia.
At the age of 18, Ruth was hand chosen to be the secretary to the first woman senator of the United States, Margaret Chase Smith of Maine, moving her to Washington D.C. She met and married her first husband, Larry Hooper and they moved to Maryland and they had 2 children. Larry passed away suddenly in 1957. She then met and married Fred Mullins, a father of 2 in 1963 at Valley Baptist Church. They had one daughter together. In 1999, they moved to Murfreesboro to be close to their daughter and became members of Belle Aire Baptist Church. She was also an avid tennis player, talented quilter, great competitor, and amazing mother and grandmother.
