Rufus W. "Whit" Smith, Jr., age 67 of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Lincoln Medical Center. Mr. Smith was a native of Lincoln County and the son of the late Rufus W. and Virginia Phillips Smith, Sr. He was also preceded in death by his first wife Kay Irwin Smith; sister, Sue Ann Noble; a brother, John Porter Gunter and a granddaughter, Brandi Burton. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Nancy Whiteside Smith; daughters, Vicky Smith Lawlor and her husband Greg of Murfreesboro and Kelly Ann Medford and her husband Ed of Centerville; step-daughter, Jodi Thompson of Pleasant View; sister, Ginny Smith King of Rockvale; grandchildren, Heather, Miranda, and Chase Lawlor, and Tyler Burton; brothers-in-law, Larry Noble, Bobby Irwin, Kent Irwin; sisters-in-law, Ruth Klock and Myra DeBoard. Funeral services with military honors will be 4:00 p.m. Saturday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Reverend Martha Touchton will officiate. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until the time of services beginning at 4:00 p.m. Burial will be 3:00pm Thursday, May 21, 2015 in Prosperity Cemetery in the Taft Community of Lincoln County. Mr. Smith was a 1965 graduate of Murfreesboro Central High School and attended MTSU. He served in the United States Air Force including time in Vietnam at the DaNang Air Force Base until being discharged honorably in October, 1972 at Sewart Air Force Base. He retired from Cumberland-Swan and Store Opening Solutions.
