Obituary

Roy N. Joyner, 80, died Monday, June 27, 2016, at Diversicare of Smyrna Nursing Home in Smyrna, TN, following a long battle with Alzheimer's.     He leaves his wife of 60 years, Barbara Jean; his daughter, Cindy; son, Michael and wife Carolyn; son, Mark and wife Lisa; grandchildren, Brandon, Holly and husband Rick, Bryan and wife Aimee, Cody, Christopher, and Daniel; and 2 great grandchildren Kylie and Jason.

Born in Chester County, TN and raised in Beech Bluff, the son of Everett R. and Rachel Mae Joyner, his early years were spent working on the farm with his Mom and Dad while attending Beech Bluff High School.

He met his wife, Barbara, doing things they both love – square dancing and boating on the Tennessee River.  They married, started a family and moved to the "big city" of Memphis, TN.  Roy did many things as a young man to provide for his family:  photography, selling vacuum cleaners, silver ware, and China but most of his professional career he was a journeyman meat cutter at Fred Montessi's, Piggly Wiggly, Big Star, and Kroger.  However, his passion was in automotive, and he opened a small body shop for several years.

Roy and Barbara spent most of their lives in Memphis, Lakeland, and Somerville working and raising their family. They were active in the Methodist Church and enjoyed working in the church.  He was very involved in the Boy Scouts and raised his sons to be Eagle Scouts.  He played on a softball team and coached teams his sons played on.  He and Barbara also enjoyed bowling and following their beloved "Memphis State Tigers".  Roy also participated in the Lions Club and Civic Club, organizing many fund raisers.

In later years he and Barbara moved to Smyrna, TN, and in retirement, he loved building things and made many homes for blue birds and dogs.

Roy was a people person and made friends everywhere he went.  He could talk to anyone about anything.  He loved his family and cherished their time together, doting on his grandchildren.  He was a "cut up," always laughing and wearing a smile on his face.  Roy was a loving, caring man, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend.  We will miss him very much.
