Roy Lamar Cannon, age 80, of Murfreesboro, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at Saint Thomas Rutherford Hospital after a brief battle with aggressive malignant mesothelioma.  A native of Dalton Ga., he is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Cannon; children,  Angela Cannon Hayes (Michael), Tara Cannon, and Greg Cannon all of Murfreesboro; and a sister, Sandra Epperson of Charleston, TN.   He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Arlie and Edith Powers Cannon.

Funeral services will be held Saturday February 11, 2017 at 2:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dr. John Hinkle, Jr. officiating.  Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.  Visitation will be Saturday from 12:00 Noon until time of services at the church.

Mr. Cannon was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.  He received a bachelor's degree from U.T. Chattanooga in 1961 and began a  45-year career in manufacturing management, working for General Motors, RCA,  and  Samsonite, before retiring at age 65.  After his retirement, he worked 15 years part time at Old Fort Golf Course as well as volunteering with MTSU's Veterans' Oral History Project.

An avid golfer, he placed first in his division in a senior golf tournament in November 2016. He also enjoyed traveling and walking the Greenway Trail, maintaining his long-time 3-mile, daily walks until a month ago and was an avid reader who enjoyed reading military history.  He attended First Presbyterian Church in Murfreesboro.

Friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 210 N Spring St, Murfreesboro, TN 37130.
