Obituary

Rosemary Thomson Heffernan, age 96, passed away Sunday, September 7, 2014. The daughter of Milton W. Thomson and Delia Crowley Thomson was born in Rutland, Vermont on January 8, 1918 where she attended local schools and graduated from Rutland High School. She attended Boston University and worked for the Rutland Railroad and the United States Wage and Hour Division. On September 8, 1945, she married Edward Mason Heffernan and moved to Monson, Massachusetts where she raised four children, worked at Monson Academy and volunteered extensively. She served as President of the Visiting Nurse Association, President of the Wing Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary, served on the Hospital Board of Managers, and was a Girl Scout Leader. On August 15, 1967, Mrs. Heffernan and her family relocated to Murfreesboro, Tennessee where she was the Office Manager for Dr. Joe Knight for 15 years. Following retirement, she worked at the St. Rose of Lima Parish Office. She was active in the Newcomers Club, served in the RCIA program and was a lector for many years at St. Rose of Lima Church. She worked at the polls for the Rutherford County Board of Elections. Recently she lived at Adams Place in Murfreesboro. Mrs. Heffernan was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Mildred Thomson Fagan; her husband, Edward M. Heffernan; and her nephew, M. Thomson Fagan. Mrs. Heffernan is survived by her son, John and wife Dina Heffernan of Virginia Beach, VA, her son, Edward "Ted" and his wife Kim Heffernan of Korea, her son Peter and his wife Drema Heffernan of Knoxville, TN; and her daughter Martha and her husband Jose Cordova of Chambersburg, PA. She also leaves three grandchildren, Delia Heffernan of Kansas City, MO, Christy Cordova of Pittsfield, MA, and Brian Cordova of Honolulu, HI. She has two great-grandchildren, Keith and Cyrie. She is also survived by her nephew Clarence and his wife Patricia Fagan of Vergennes, VT; many great nieces, and great nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews as well as many longtime friends and acquaintances. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday at 1:00PM at St. Rose of Lima in Murfreesboro. Father Mark Sappenfield will officiate. Burial will follow in Bethany Cemetery in Monson, Massachusetts on Friday. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.
