Obituary

Robert E. Rose, age 91, died Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at his home. Mr. Rose was born May 28, 1920 on a farm in Wilson County near Shop Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Walker and Lola McSpadden Rose; his first wife Ann Sanders Rose; two sisters Edna McMichael and Grace Eatherly; and a brother Harold Rose. Mr. Rose is survived by his wife Joan McCullough Rose; daughter Beverly Rose Lamb of New Orleans; granddaughter Whitney Brooks (Roy) and great-grandson Timothy Roy Brooks, Allison Steinfield (Rob) and great-granddaughter Ann Rose Steinfield; daughter Jennifer Wallace (Mark), and grandsons Spencer and McCullough Wallace of Smithville; son Johnny Montgomery (Jackie) and grandchildren Zack and Zoe Montgomery of Murfreesboro. Mr. Rose attended Elementary School at Shop Springs and was a graduate of Lebanon High School. After school he farmed and worked at Ragland-Potter wholesale grocery and Sally Ann Bakery. In 1943, he began working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Lebanon and was later transferred to Rutherford County as Chief Clerk from 1944 to 1948. In 1949, he became the manager and general insurance agent of Rutherford County Farm Bureau where he remained until his retirement in 1985. Under his leadership, Rutherford County Farm Bureau grew to be the largest agency in the state of Tennessee. In 1953, he helped organize the Optimist Club of Murfreesboro where he served as its president. In 1955, he was one of the organizers of the National Bank of Murfreesboro, which was later bought by First Tennessee Bank. He served as director of both banks and as chairman from 1976 to 2007. He served on the Board of the Rutherford County Adult Activity Center for twenty years. He held life-time memberships in the 4-H Club and the F.F.A. Club. In 1956, he was elected to the Rutherford County School Board from the old 13th district where he served for eight years. In 1966, he was elected to the Murfreesboro City Council where he served for sixteen years. While on the Council, he was appointed to the Murfreesboro Electric Board where he served for sixteen years. In 1989, he was appointed as a Democrat in the County Election Commission until his retirement in 2008. Mr. Rose was a Mason for over 60 years and was a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge #18. Throughout his life he was honored with many awards. Most recently he was inducted into the Tennessee Insurance Hall of Fame. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, Murfreesboro. Bro David Young and Bro. Julian Goodpaster will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mr. Roses grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters and great-granddaughters. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, Murfreesboro. Memorials may be made to North Boulevard Church of Christ Building Fund, Agriculture in the Classroom through Farm Bureau, Rutherford County Adult Activity Center (Journey in Community Living) on Haley Street, or the charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Rose.
