Obituary

Raleigh Alderson Miller, age 94, died Tuesday in State College, PA. He was a native of Murfreesboro and the son of the late Robert Cleveland and Mary Smith Miller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Helen McHenry Miller who died in 2002. Mr. Miller was a descendant of pre-revolutionary war settlers from the British Isles that were some of the earliest settlers in Middle Tennessee. He attended Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU). During World War II he worked in metallurgical engineering in Alabama at United States Steel. In 1952 he transferred to Pennsylvania when US Steel built a major plant near Yardley along the Delaware River. A lifelong learner, he continued studies at the University of Alabama and University of Pennsylvania. Over a forty-plus year career he became an expert in tin plating and quality control. During his post-retirement years, he continued to consult on steel production overseas, providing technical assistance in approximately twenty countries in the Americas, Europe and Asia. He is survived by five daughters, Ann Elizabeth Miller of Kailua, HI; Janis Miller McCrary of Gray, TN; Rebecca Miller Hitchner of Carlisle, MA; Jeanie Miller Burns of State College, PA and Katherine Miller-Hannon of Woodstown, NJ.
