Obituary

PETER S. LA PAGLIA age 65, of Murfreesboro died June 10, 2008 at his home. Funeral services will be 3:00pm Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Deacon Peter Semich will officiate. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery. He was a native of Shelbyville. He is survived by his mother Louise Watson LaPaglia of Shelbyville, wife Jane Smotherman LaPaglia, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Patricia LaPaglia of Chapel Hill, N.C. daughter and son-in-law Laura and Drew Swift of Charlotte, N.C. and grandson Leo Vincent La Paglia. Mr. LaPaglia was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He received his B.S. and M.A. in history from M.T.S.U. He actively served in the US Army 1966-1969 including a tour in Vietnam. Mr. LaPaglia enjoyed a thirty-five year career in the museum and public history fields. His love of museums and history led him to establish in 1990 his museum consulting firm, LaPaglia & Associates. He assisted many small and large museums and historic sites throughout the country with master planning, building programs, education programs, exhibit development and executive searches. Believing strongly in the value of continuing education for museum personnel he conducted seminars and workshops nationwide. He developed and served as program facilitator for the annual Jekyll Island Management Institute for the Southeastern Museums Conference. Now in its ninth year the Institute has provided training for over 140 museum personnel. Mr. LaPaglia served as co-editor of Public History, Essays from the Field which is used in higher education public history programs throughout the country. In honor of his contributions to the museum and public history fields a scholarship has been established in his name at the Southeastern Museums Conference for the Jekyll Island Management Institute.
