Obituary

Pearl McBroom Scarbrough, age 96 of Murfreesboro, TN  passed away Sunday July 2, 2017 at Life Care Center in Tullahoma, TN.

Visitation will be 10:00AM to 11:00AM on Thursday July 6, 2017, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, 1488 Lascassas Pike, Murfreesboro followed by a graveside service at 11:30AM at Evergreen Cemetery, 519 Greenland Drive Murfreesboro. Kirk Mason will officiate.

She is survived by son, John F. Scarbrough III and wife Martha of Tullahoma; daughter, Marty Scarbrough of Monrovia, CA; nephew Gregory McBroom and niece, Paula McBroom both of Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by parents, Claud Lee McBroom, and Fannie Todd McBroom; husband, J. Fred Scarbrough, Jr; brother, Claud Lee McBroom, Jr. and Todd McBroom, and infant granddaughter Jennifer Lee Musselwhite.

Mrs. Scarbrough was a teacher for 43 years, spending the last 26 years of her career teaching in the Murfreesboro City School System. She was the first teacher hired at the new Reeves Rogers School and later transferred to Hobgood School. Mrs. Scarbrough taught all grades throughout her career, but found her calling in teaching second grade students. Mrs. Scarbrough was a pioneer of the teaching the phonics approach to reading and well known for no-nonsense teaching and being able to motivate her students to excel.

She received her B.S. Degree from MTSU with postgraduate work at Tennessee Tech and Ward Belmont in Nashville. She was a member of National Educators Association, Tennessee Education Association, Murfreesboro Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Business Women's Professional Club, and the Woman's Club. Mrs. Scarbrough was a member of North Boulevard Church of Christ and longtime teacher of Sunday school.

Mrs. Scarbrough was the owner of successful Scarbrough Fare Antique Shop. She traveled extensively throughout her life. She went on antique buying trips, bear hunting in Canada, sightseeing in Africa and numerous trips abroad including Port Scarborough, England.

In her youth, she was the star forward for the Murfreesboro Central High School basketball team. Her team won three "Little Tennessee" Basketball Championships and she was the high scorer for three years in the Tennessee Regional Basketball Tournaments.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Motlow College Foundation for the John and Martha Scarbrough Scholarship fund or to the MTSU Foundation for the Charlie and Hazel Daniels Veterans and Family Center.
