Obituary

Dr. Nile Ott McCrary of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away Wednesday February 15, 2012 at Middle Tennessee Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Aubra Kirk and Estelle McFarlin McCrary. Dr. McCrary was also preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Smith, and brothers, Porter and Cecil McCrary. Dr. McCrary is survived by his wife, Sammye VanHooser McCrary; son, Dr. S. Van McCrary of Stony Brook, NY; and brothers, Joe B. McCrary and Emmet K. McCrary both of Murfreesboro, TN. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, with Dr. David Young and William Bryson officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM until time of service. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery with Dalton McCrary, Randall McCrary, Thomas D. Vance, Ralph H. Vance, Jr., Michael M. Vaught, and Carey Smith serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Judge and Mrs. Ben H. McFarlin, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Bob McMillian, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Garman, Dr. and Mrs. C. Edwin Howard, Dr. Darrell Spencer, Dr. Joel Shore, Dr. Ernest Farmer, Truman L. Jones, Jr., Ms. Joyce Ealy, and the elders and deacons of North Boulevard Church of Christ. Dr. McCrary was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University. He received his Masters Degree from George Peabody College and Doctorate of Education from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. During his career, Dr. McCrary served as Supervisor of Veterans Education, Director of School Facilities for the State of Tennessee for thirty-one years, and was a member for several years on teams working with Peabody College of Comprehensive Studies for School Systems throughout the southeastern states. He was also selected to serve as International President of the Council of Education Facility Planners and was a member of the council for forty-five consecutive years. Dr. McCrary was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during WWII. He was a member of North Boulevard Church of Christ, the Sons of the American Revolution, and was a direct descendant of Captain William Lytle.
