Obituary

Mrs. Nell Northcutt McElroy, age 96, died Friday, January 16, 2009, at the Lincoln Care Center in Fayetteville, Tennessee. Mrs. McElroy was a native of the Porterfield community. She was the youngest child of Beulah F. Ready and J.D. Northcutt. Mrs. McElroy was descended from an area pioneer family including James Ready, Cannon County veteran of the War of 1812 and Christopher Cooper and Ezekiel Alexander, Sr., Revolutionary War patriots. Mrs. McElroy graduated from Tennessee State Teachers College in Murfreesboro in 1939. She was a teacher in both Cannon and Rutherford Counties, and her career spanned 42 years. Mrs. McElroy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church here in Murfreesboro. Mrs. McElroy was preceded in death by her husband, Neil W. McElroy; her brothers Clark, Thurman, and Dave Northcutt; and her sisters Eppie Duggin and Grace Northcutt. She is survived by two daughters, Mary ( Greg ) Easley of Kingsport, TN; Martha (Neal ) Golden of Fayetteville, TN; and two grandchildren, Mary Ruth and Wil Golden. The visitation will be Sunday afternoon at Woodfin Memorial Chapel from 3PM until 6PM and the funeral will follow on Monday at 1PM at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with burial in the Wards Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Murfreesboro or the charity of your choice.
