A Life Rooted in Faith and Love

On September 23, 2026, Melanie Lynn Flowers went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was 65. To Sarah, she was Mom. To Sydney and Miles, she was Lita, who proudly called them her “favorite grandchildren.” To 38 years of hospice patients and their families, she was their favorite caretaker. And with just about everyone she ever met, she struck up a conversation and spread love. She loved her flowers, her birds, and her Green Bay Packers. But more than anything, Melanie fiercely loved Jesus, and it showed in how she served, how she sacrificed, and how she cared for the people God put in her path.

Melanie was born on June 29, 1961, to Wincle A. Flowers and Barbara A. Howe, and was raised and adopted by James Hannes (October 19, 1934 – March 9, 2001). She grew into a woman of grit and fierce independence, and she spent her life looking after other people.

She was still a teenager when Sarah was born. Even with a young baby, she finished high school and earned her nursing degree from the University of Vermont by the time she was 21. Then she packed up and moved to Florida to start her career and build a life for the two of them. It was the kind of strength Sarah got to watch up close her whole life.

For 38 years, in three different states, Melanie was a hospice nurse. She walked into every room and home with discernment, bringing peace and love with her. She kept her patients comfortable, protected their dignity, and made sure their families never felt alone. She considered it a privilege to gently usher people through life’s final chapter. For Melanie, it was never just a job; it was her calling and purpose.

And Melanie could talk to anyone. Really, everyone and anyone. She was curious about people and genuinely wanted to hear their stories. She was a friend to many.

Family was the center of Melanie’s world. She was a strong, caring mother to Sarah and Cleo and a loving daughter to her parents. Her grandchildren, Sydney and Miles, were her pride and joy. The love she poured into them will stay with them all their lives.

Melanie was happiest enjoying the simple things. A Master Gardener in three states, she delighted in tending her flowers and watching things grow, and she always kept an eye out for the birds. In all of it, she saw the beauty of God’s creation. That love went with her when she traveled, too. She treasured exploring new places and finding beauty far beyond her own garden.

And then there were sports. Melanie bled green and gold for her Green Bay Packers, but her truest loyalty belonged to her family. She cheered for every team her daughter coached and every team her grandchildren played on, and she was a faithful presence in the stands, showing up, cheering loud, and loving every minute of it. For all who knew her, a heartfelt “Go Pack Go!” will always bring her to mind.

Melanie was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara A. Howe; her birth father, Wincle A. Flowers; her adoptive father, James Hannes; and her brothers, Alex Lee Smith, Donald Flowers, Jerry Flowers, and James Flowers.

She leaves behind her husband, Dennis “Dino” Wilkerson; her daughter, Sarah Rucker, and son-in-law, Cleo Rucker; her beloved grandchildren, Sydney and Miles Rucker; and her former husband, Steve Perry, Sarah’s stepfather, who helped raise Sarah and remained Melanie’s dear friend and parenting partner. She is also survived by her brothers, Ronald (Josephine) Smith, Wiley (Susan) Smith, Wayne Hannes (Barb), and Jack (Tresa) Flowers; her sisters, Sandra (David) Edwards, Mary (Mark) Steberg, Linda (Edward) Spitzer, and Elva Jane Moore; and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.

Those who love Melanie will find her everywhere: in a flower opening to the morning sun, a bird outside the window, a breathtaking view along the road, and the cheers rising from the stands. They will feel her close whenever a conversation turns into a connection, or a simple kindness brings comfort to someone who needs it. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the many patients and families she cared for, and the faith that carried her home.
