Maurice Arthur Wright, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, after a brief illness. Born in Coventry, England, on August 2, 1935, Maurice was the cherished son of James and Evelyn Wright. He was predeceased by his parents and his two brothers, Dennis and Stephen Wright.

Maurice's journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and a remarkable ability to connect with others. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Pamela West Wright, and their three sons: Andrew Maurice Wright (Leanna) of Murfreesboro, TN, Geoffrey Arthur Wright (Karen) of Knoxville, TN, and Stewart West Wright (Maria) of Cincinnati, OH. Maurice was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Haley Wright Cole (Patrick), Tyler Andrew Wright (Alexandra), Emma Wright Potter (Izaak), Kyle Geoffrey Wright (Hal), Alex Stewart Wright (Stephanie), Rachel Wright Milholland (Mark), Samuel Benjamin Wright (fiancé Maria), and Gabriella Sonya Wright. His legacy continues through his three and soon to be four great-grandchildren.

Maurice's academic pursuits led him to University of South Wales, where he laid the foundation for a life driven by curiosity and knowledge and earned a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering. He left Wales in 1962 to pursue a career in the United States. He moved to Tullahoma in 1968 to further his materials research at the University of Tennessee Space Institute. His passion for learning and innovation was further exemplified through his founding of the University of Southern Illinois Materials Technology Center and Friction Studies Center in 1984. Excellence in his field yielded multiple published and presented papers across the globe. He also authored a well-regarded textbook.

Throughout his life, Maurice was known for his quick wit and welcoming smile, traits that endeared him to friends and family alike. He had a unique ability to make anyone feel at home, often raising a pint in camaraderie with both new acquaintances and old friends.

Maurice's love of adventure was evident throughout his life. As a young man, he raced motorcycles and was excellent rugby player. An avid pilot and sailor, he embraced the freedom of the skies and the serenity of the seas. His strategic mind found joy in bridge, where he achieved the status of a Life Master, a testament to his intellect and perseverance.

The family will honor Maurice's life in a private ceremony, respecting his wishes for an intimate farewell. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Maurice's memory to a charity of your choice, celebrating his life by supporting causes that uplift and inspire.

Maurice Arthur Wright will be remembered for his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy will continue to shine brightly in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
