Obituary

Matthew Royal, Jr. age 77 of Murfreesboro died Friday May 27, 2011 at his home. He was a native of Nashville and was preceded in death by his father, Matthew Royal, Sr.; mother, Lillian Ruth Reeder Royal Farrell and step-father, Cameron Farrell; sisters, Mary Elizabeth Royal Spain, and Julia May Royal. Mr. Royal was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Korean War serving on the USS Princeton. He worked for Liggett & Meyer Tobacco Company as factory representative. He opened Mr. Swiss restaurant in Murfreesboro, and was chief of Police at MTSU during the 1970s. Mr. Royal retired Detective Commander with Rutherford County Sheriff Department, and graduate of Excelesior College with a Associates Degree. He was a 50 year member of Mt. Moriah Masonic Lodge, and also with the York Rite, Scottish Rite, and Shrine. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Royal; children, Elyse Johnson and husband Steve of Milton, Michael Royal of Smyrna, Barry Royal and wife, Sherry of Murfreesboro, and Wade Royal and wife Anna of Murfreesboro; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to any charity of your choice in memory of Mr. Royal. Visitation will be 5:00PM to 7:00PM Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with a Masonic service to begin at 7:00PM.
