Mary "Carty"
Mccarty Roberts
August 9, 1936 – February 16, 2025
Mary "Carty" McCarty Roberts, born on August 9, 1936, passed away on February 16, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar Leon McCarty Jr. and Gladys Hamilton McCarty, as well as her husband of almost seventy years, James Daniel Richardson Roberts Sr. She is survived by her three children, Deborah Roberts Horst of Kennesaw, GA; Mary Roberts McMakin (Tom) of Bozeman, MT; and Jim Roberts (Kate) of Dickson, TN; along with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Carty dedicated many years of service to the Oaklands Association Inc., where she played a pivotal role in preserving local history. She served as President of the Board of Trustees from 1999 to 2002, during which she helped secure funding for the Visitors Center, including the Maney Ballroom. This addition provided much-needed space for conferences, social events, weddings, offices, and the Mansion Gift Shop. She continued her service with multiple terms as Treasurer and contributed as a member of the Executive and Finance Committees while also volunteering as a docent.
Beyond Oaklands, Carty was a member of Charity Circle and the Craddock Book Club. She was an early supporter member of the Murfreesboro Little Theatre and she and Jim Rich renovated the historic Palmer House on Main Street. A devoted member of Central Christian Church, she served as an Elder and chaired the 100th Anniversary Committee.
Carty found joy in playing bridge, flower arranging, gardening, and reading. Her dedication to history, community service, and the arts left a lasting impact on those around her.
Memorial gifts may be made to Oaklands Association, Inc. or the Central Christian Church of Murfreesboro TN in her honor.
