Mary Ann Mathes, 85, of Quincy, California passed away October 31, 2013 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Mary Ann (Carter) Mathes was born to Charles and Lottie Carter in Bushong, Kansas. While a young girl, the family farm was wiped out by the great dustbowl and the family relocated to Quincy, California where Mary Ann attended Pioneer Elementary and graduated from Quincy High School. In 1947, she married Ray Mathes, raised a family and eventually retired from PG&E, where her front counter duties made her a familiar face to most of the families in the Quincy area. She was also active in the community through her involvement with Beta Sigma Phi sorority, the Quincy Soroptomist Club, and the Plumas District Hospital Volunteers. She is survived by her sons Ray Mathes, Jr. in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Jim Mathes in New Bedford, Massachusetts, along with six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her large family of eight brothers and sisters leaves a legacy of hundreds of nieces, nephews, grand- and great-grand-relatives up and down the west coast. Her remains will be interred alongside her husband at the Old Quincy Cemetery following a celebration of life and family in the spring. Woodfin Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements www.woodfinchapel.com
