Obituary

Mary Ellen Batey Potts Howell, age 96, passed away on Tuesday Sept.2, 2014, where she resided with her daughter and son-in-law in the Rock Springs Community of Smyrna. Mrs. Howell was born July 24, 1918 in Davidson County, TN. She was the second of two children born to the late Carlton Clifton Batey and Tennie Mai Treppard Batey. She was also preceded in death by a brother Clifton "Bubber" Treppard Batey, her first husband Claude Eugene Potts and Norvill Charlie Howell, her second husband. Funeral services will be held 2:00pm Friday at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna with Teb Batey officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Mary Ellen was married to Claude Eugene Potts in 1936. They raised six children on their farm in the Rock Springs Community. Mary Ellen is survived from this union by Dolcie Dodd and husband Wayne of Rockvale, Carolyn Potts Mullins Vaughn and husband Murray of LaVergne, Carlton Eugene "Buddy" Potts and wife Jan of Smyrna, Geraldine Pewitt and husband William of Murfreesboro, Vickie Bain and husband Wayne of Smyrna, Dianne Britt and husband Richard of Ashland, AL; eleven grandchildren; twenty-eight great grandchildren; twenty-three great-great grandchildren; seven step grandchildren and nineteen step great grandchildren. Mrs. Howell remarried in 1979 to Norvill Charlie Howell. From this union she is survived by step daughter Mary Howell Wright Evans and husband Joe of Lascassas, step son Billy Howell and wife Joanne of Michigan; six step grandchildren; eight step great grandchildren and five step great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Howell lived thirty plus years on their farm in the Rock Springs Community, and her remaining years in Rutherford County. Mary worked at Central State Mental Institution where she was a dedicated nurse technician from 1964 to 1980, retiring at the age of 62. Mrs. Howell was a devoted wife, mother and grandparent, loving God, church and family with all her heart. She had many friends and she never met a stranger, her arms and heart were always open. She loved to travel with Charlie and attend special events, especially The Uncle Dave Macon Days. Mrs. Howell was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ, attending church at Rock Springs Church of Christ, Minerva Drive Church of Christ, Smyrna Division St. Church of Christ and Jefferson Pike Church of Christ. Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00pm at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna. Memorials may be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203 or the charity of your choice.
