Mrs. Rushing married Elvis Rushing on July 15, 1942 and was married 59 years until his passing in 2001. Mrs. Rushing was born September 29, 1918 and grew up on the family farm on Dill Lane. She was in the first class to complete all eight grades at Training School and was able to attend the 75th anniversary of its beginning. She was a 1936 graduate of Central High School and received her B.S. degree in Home Economics from Middle Tennessee State University in 1940. Her first job was teaching Science at Watertown High School for $75 a month. When World War II broke out, she watched some of the Seniors leave for military service never to return. The bond she developed with that first class led her to return to Watertown reunions throughout the years. She taught one year at Brandon, Florida while her husband was preparing to leave for China. During the war, Mrs. Rushing returned to Murfreesboro to assist C. B. Rushing, her father-in-law in the family grocery business. After the war she assisted her husband in the businesses which became known as the Rushing's Supermarket and Pop's Salvage Company on the corner of Vine and Walnut Streets. Mrs. Rushing never returned to public school as a classroom teacher. She chose to be a homemaker and devote herself to her children and caring for her extended family. Teaching toddlers in Sunday school, regular worship, Bible study, flowers, cooking, and supporting community causes were some of her passions. A descendant of Isaac Wright, who was granted 450 acres in Rutherford County for his service in the Revolutionary War; Mrs. Rushing had a keen interest in this county, its families, its homes, farms, cemeteries, and institutions. Her excellent memory and record keeping into her 92nd year made her an excellent resource for people researching their family history, historical events, and the progress of Rutherford County. Mrs. Rushing enjoyed her associations serving as an officer in Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Woodbury Road Home Demonstration Club, Rutherford County Blacksmith's Society, The Woman's Club, William Lytle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities, and the Rutherford County Historical Society. Mrs. Rushing put her faith in Christ and was baptized into Him at East Main Church of Christ as a young girl. She was an active member at the Kingwood Heights Church of Christ for over 65 years.
