Martin Jennings Rooker, age 75, of Walter Hill died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at his home. He was a native of Walter Hill and the son of the late Joseph J. and Ethel Grace Cook Rooker. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Elders Joe Arnold and Ricky Arnold will officiate. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors. Mr. Rooker is survived by his wife, Sonya Fann Rooker, sons Joseph Martin Rooker of Columbia and Alton Douglas Rooker of Walter Hill, daughter Mary Katherine Rooker of Nashville and granddaughter Millicent Caroline Rooker of Columbia; brother Charles Leland Rooker and wife Ann of Walter Hill, brother Joe P. Rooker and wife Telena of Walter Hill, sister Mary Joyce Harrell of Columbus, Georgia. Mr. Rooker was a member of Providence Primitive Baptist Church. He was a retired physical therapist from Alvin C. York Medical Center. He was a 1955 graduate of Walter Hill High School. He received his masters degree at Middle Tennessee State University and his degree in physical therapy at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. Mr. Rooker was actively involved in NARFE. He enjoyed building and restoring log homes. He was a past member of the Rutherford County Historical Society. He enjoyed reading and researching Civil War History. Mr. Rooker researched and documented the history of Bradley Academy, which was founded on his ancestral land, Pebble Hill. Mr. Rooker also loved reading about and researching WWI. He and Sonya toured the battlefields in France in 2008. Visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00pm Monday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.
