Obituary

Martha McKelley Meeks, age 86 passed away on Thursday June 3, 2010. Born on July 1st, 1923, Martha was the daughter of Lutie Jameson Osborn and James Dudley McKelley along with her brother James McKelley, deceased, and her sister Sarah McKelley King. Mrs. Meeks was a sixth generation resident of Rutherford County. After graduation from East High School in Nashville, she received her degree as a registered nurse from St. Thomas Hospital. Following a brief employment at the public health department, she entered the US Navy nursing corps as an Ensign in 1944 where she served in Norfolk, VA and Millington Naval Base in Memphis. There she met Melvin Morgan Meeks and they were married on April 15th, 1950. Returning to Murfreesboro in late 1954, she began a career in real estate. Later she and her husband teamed with Betty and Ed Bellamy in opening the bowling lanes on Broad Street. In 1968, the family moved to Hopkinsville KY, where she retired as Medical Supervisor for Jennie Stuart Hospital. She was also active in the DAR and became Regent for the Col. John Green Chapter based there. In addition she was elected as a Kentucky Colonel. In 1985, she was honored in Constitution Hall as one of 400 DAR members that served during WWII. Mrs. Meeks retired to Murfreesboro and were she was a resident of AdamsPlace Assisted Living for many years. She is survived by her children, Melvin Morgan Meeks 3rd, Martha Elizabeth Meeks, and Martin Collier Meeks; her grandchildren Dasha Laura Meeks and Matthew Brian Meeks; her sister Sarah McKelley King and brother-in-law, Lewis Meeks, and his wife June of Perry, GA; sister in law, Elizabeth Meeks Schoonover of Hawthorne, CA. Funeral service will be 2:00PM Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
