Obituary

Marlin Dill, age 85, was born in the Halls Hill Community of Rutherford County May 25, 1926. The son of Kyle M. and Annie Simpson Dill both preceded him in death. A brother Joe Lawton Dill died in 1991. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Essia Bowman Dill; daughter, Nancy Dill, an RN in the MTMC emergency room; Donald Dill, an environmental engineer in Knoxville, TN; three granddaughters, Nancy Malynn, Michele, and Marilin Kelley of Murfreesboro, and grandson John McLemore and his two children of Oak Ridge. He graduated from Halls Hill Elementary and from Kittrell High in 1944. Upon graduation he was inducted into the army and trained as a paratrooper. He was sent to the Philippians as a replacement in the 11th Airborne Division where they were training for the invasion of Japan. When the first atomic bomb dropped the division was flown to Okinawa to await the occupation of Japan. He was with the first troops to occupy Japan. After discharge from the army he entered MTSU and graduated in 1951 and married the same day. Marlin was hired in January contingent upon graduating in June and went to work in Oak Ridge in the nuclear industry immediately upon graduation and worked there for 41 years. They returned to Murfreesboro upon retiring in 1992 to be near their daughter and wife relatives. In the early 1960s he developed a method of determining mercury in water in the parts per billion. This procedure later became a standard method used in measuring mercury in the environment. He received several plant awards for labor savings methods and was a co-author of a computer program for tracing and accountability of environmental samples. He was the leader of the quality control group for several of the nuclear chemical laboratories. He also worked with the Boy Scouts for several years and set up a non-profit corporation to sponsor the Boy Scout troops. This proved very beneficial for the troops since several people made donations to the corporation of canoes, boats and other equipment useful to the scouts. He served on the Board of Directors of the East Tennessee Riding Club for several years. This organization was primarily for young people interested in horses of all breeds. He was a member of the New York Avenue Church of Christ the entire time they lived in Oak Ridge and became a member of North Boulevard Church of Christ upon moving to Murfreesboro. Funeral services will be at 10:00AM Friday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Brother John Risse and Doctor David Young will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery will military honors.
