Obituary

Lt. Colonel Robert J. McDonald, Retired USAF, age 92 of Murfreesboro, TN, died Friday January 27, 2012, at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. He was born August 2, 1919 to the late Eddie and Emma McDonald in Colfax, West Virginia. Mr. McDonald was also preceded in death by his daughter, Arline J. Graves and son-in-law Robert L. Graves. Mr. McDonald is survived by his beloved Wife of 68 years, Margaret Peggy Warren McDonald of Murfreesboro, TN; his daughter, Darlyne M. Pieper and son-in-law E. Jeffrey Pieper of Basking Ridge, NJ; his grandsons, Robert and David Pieper; his sister-in-law Beatrice Davison, as well as nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 12:00 noon Friday February 3, 2012 at Woodfin Funeral Chapel with Horace Stogner officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey, Robert, and David Pieper, Paul Shaver, Bob and Tom Warren. Mr. McDonald completed high school in Bridgeport, W. VA, attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, OK, and completed three years apprenticeship in sheet metal for the Navy in Portsmouth, VA. He entered the Air Force Cadet program in 1943 at Slippery Rock, PA. After graduating as a cadet in Blytheville, AR, he received his flight wings and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his 31 years of duty serving our country, Lt. Col. McDonalds assignments included Saipan, Okinawa, Greenland, Japan, France, Vietnam, and many locations throughout the United States. Through his career, Lt. Col. McDonald served in positions, including test pilot, squadron commander flying reconnaissance in Vietnam, Chief of Maintenance, and Wing Commander. Following his retirement from the Air Force in Little Rock, AR, his family moved to Murfreesboro. He was employed by Benham & Company in Murfreesboro from which he later retired as manager.
