Larry Dale Kirk, 82, passed away on August 11, 2026, following a brief illness. Larry was born on April 9, 1944, in Yazoo City, Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents M.T. and Marjorie Kirk, and his two sisters, Jerry Sue Cresswell and Tina Gray.
He is survived by his wife of five years, Cathy Kirk. He is also survived by his sister, Betty Glenn Harris of Ft. Worth, Texas; Stepsons, Mitch Fitzpatrick (Jenni) of Murfreesboro, TN and Mike Fitzpatrick (Penny) of Davenport, Iowa.
A native of Bentonia, MS, Larry went to Bentonia High School. He attended Ole Miss on a football scholarship, then transferred to Delta State University where he played football and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1966. He served with the United States Army's 7th Special Forces at Fort Bragg, NC (1966-1967) and served in the Mississippi National Guard (1967-1972). He was a proud member of the elite Green Berets.
Larry Kirk began his career in the electricity field with Mississippi Power and Light Company in Jackson, Vicksburg and Brookhaven, MS. In 1969, he was employed by the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga, TN. He became General Manager of Murfreesboro Electric Department on May 1, 1982, and retired on June 30, 2006. During his 24-year career he oversaw tremendous growth and served in leadership roles for many Tennessee electric industry associations.
Larry was an active member of his community serving on many boards, including the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Crime Stoppers, MTSU Development Foundation and American Red Cross. He was a loyal member of World Outreach Church, the Blue Raider Athletic Association, Murfreesboro Noon Rotary Club, the Rutherford County Sportsman's Club, and John Harney's weekly Bible study group. He enjoyed boating, bicycling, hiking, and attending sporting events. Larry and Cathy enjoyed traveling and were able to take many trips during the past few years.
Visitation will be held at Woodfin Funeral Chapel, 1488 Lascassas Pike, Murfreesboro, TN on Sunday, August 16, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Woodfin Funeral Chapel on Monday, August 17, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with interment to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Murfreesboro, TN.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Wounded Warrior Project in memory of Larry.
