Obituary

King Wells Jamison, Jr., age 83, of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 26, 2015. Dr. Jamison was born in Meridian, MS and was the son of the late King Wells Jamison, Sr. and Edna May Jamison. He grew up in Jackson, TN and graduated from Jackson High School in 1948. He received a B.S. degree from Union University and a M.A. from George Peabody College. A veteran of the Korean War, he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy aboard the U.S.S. Des Moines. Following his naval duty and brief tenures as a high school science teacher in Fernandina Beach, FL and West Memphis, AR; Dr. Jamison returned to George Peabody College where he earned his Ph.D. in education with an emphasis in mathematics. The remainder of his career was spent teaching mathematics at Kentucky Southern College in Louisville, KY and Middle Tennessee State University where he retired after 35 years of service. Dr. Jamison often commented about how rewarding it was to have a vocation doing what he loved most, teaching college students and adding value to their lives. He was a life-long learner and a true renaissance man. He was not only a mathematician but a historian, philosopher, theologian, author, artist, and craftsman. He was proud of the fact that he was an Eagle Scout. His father was one of the earliest Eagle Scouts in the United States and his three sons and a grandson all earned the rank of Eagle. Dr. Jamison served as scoutmaster for Troop 416 at First Baptist Church in Murfreesboro and was a proponent of the ideals and life skills that scouting teaches. He became a Christ follower in his youth and shared the good news of his faith with his words and actions. He served as a deacon and an adult Bible teacher in the churches he has attended. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Dr. Jamison is survived by his wife of 62 years, Catherine Ramsey Jamison; his brother, Frank Jamison and his wife Ann of Kingston, TN; four children, Ben and his wife Carol, Jeff and his wife Judy, Julie Jamison Ristvedt all of Murfreesboro, and Kendall and his wife Debbie of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren, Benjamin (Becky) Jamison, Audrey (Patrick) Sherer, Catherine (Kevin) Keller, Allison (Erik) Larsson, Preston Jamison, and Kirsten Jamison; and great granddaughters, Blair Jamison and Charley Jamison. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Victor Ristvedt, Jr. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Dr. Mark Gregory will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday June 29, 2015 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorials in memory of Dr. Jamison may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund or to the Wounded Warrior Project at P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675.
