Kathryn Dell Melton Tabor was hired by L&N Railroad in the mid-seventies as the very first woman Brake person /Conductor in their history. She worked directly on the freight-trains with an all-male crew traveling from Nashville, TN to Chattanooga, TN and back again. She was responsible for ensuring the 40-pound switches were thrown to switch tracks and signaling to the crew for their safety. Kay worked all hours of the day and night during cold and hot weather. She walked and ran alongside the freight trains for miles and miles during each shift, rain, snow, or sunshine. Kay retired from CSX Transportation after 20 plus years of service. Her determination to provide for her 3 small children is what fueled her success in pioneering such new territory for women.
Kathryn is laid to rest at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
