Obituary

Joseph Turner Smith, age 86 of Murfreesboro died Wednesday May 7, 2014. He was a native of Tullahoma, TN and was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Lela Smith, and son, Clint Smith. Mr. Smith was Director of Bands at Middle Tennessee State University for over 35 years. He was a member of North Boulevard Church of Christ and enjoyed Boating at Old Hickory Lake, restoring cars, woodworking and travel. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 66 years, Billie Smith; children, Cynthia Keith of Murfreesboro, Jeff Smith and wife Lori of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Cindy Magana and husband Juan of Omaha, Nebraska., Jamin Keith of Murfreesboro, Cayce Keith of Murfreesboro, Monique Smith of Atlanta, Chase Smith of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Landon Magana and Tallula Magana both of Omaha. Joe Smith was a survivor; He survived Paris Island as a young U.S. Marine Corp Sargent. He survived 66 years of marriage with Billie at his side. He survived raising three children with his sanity. He survived three cancers with his hair. He survived over 40 years of marching band drama with his hearing and his passion for good music. He survived many woodworking projects with all his fingers intact. He survived vintage car restoration with only a few bruised knuckles. He survived many hour of boating on Old Hickory Lake without sinking. He survived 9 boxers, all who loved his tail scratchers. He survived his 86 years with determination, perseverance and "just a little levity!" In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Middle Tennessee State University Band of Blue Scholarship Fund. Funeral service will be 4PM Saturday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Visitation will be 2PM until 4PM at Woodfin Memorial Chapel www.woodfinchapel.com
