Obituary

JOHN FRANCIS MCCALLA, JR., made the transition from this life to the next on April 6, 2011 at his home in Woodstock, Georgia, surrounded by his family. He quietly slipped away to be with his Lord after an extended battle with kidney cancer. John was an inspiring father, teaching by example, and always there for his children. Additionally, he was a great friend to many and will be missed dearly by both family and friends. His love for cars led him to rebuild several during his lifetime, including most recently a loving restoration of a 1934 Oldsmobile Coupe. A private memorial service will be held at Georgia National Cemetery on Fridy, April 15th 2011. A public service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 First United Methodist Chapel in Roswell, Georgia, at 3:00PM. He was born January 16, 1941 in Memphis, Tennessee, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Christian Brothers College. John served on several Boards of Directors, including Boy Scouts, United Way, Economic Development Council and Chamber of Commerce. He received the Silver Beaver Award by the Piedmont Council of North Carolina for his work with the Boy Scouts of America in 2000. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. John was a 32nd degree Mason, and a Shriner as a member of the Zaman Grotto. He formerly held positions of President of King Arthur/Thonet from 1988-2002, Director of Operations for Samsonite 1977-1988 and Chromcraft Furniture. Preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Iva (Pete) McCalla, he is survived by his wife and best friend, Margie Busey McCalla, daughters Angela McCalla (Bobby Arellano), Wendy McCalla Lard (Roger), son Patrick Smith (Vicky), and grandchildren, Leighanne Chvila Holloway, Brittney Russell, and Waylon Smith, and one great-granddaughter, McCalleigh Marie Rogers. His family is especially grateful to the staff at Compassionate Care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, St Jude Childrens Hospital or American Cancer Society.
