Obituary

JOHN BENTON MANKIN, age 81, former Rutherford County Executive, died Saturday at his home. Mr. Mankin was a native of Rutherford County, and son of the late Weck Hodge and Georgia Brandon Mankin. Funeral services will be at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Dr. Mike Smith and Teb Batey will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Mankin is survived by his wife Martha McCrary Mankin; son and his wife, John B. Ben and Kim Mankin of Murfreesboro; daughter and her husband, Elizabeth Gaye and Stefan Kruger, of New York City, NY; brothers, Weck Hodge Mankin, and Harry Holland both of Murfreesboro, Larry Holland of Mt. Juliet, Michael Holland, Okeechobee, FL; sisters, Audura Drake of Manchester, and Paulette Statum of Murfreesboro; grandson, John Benton Mankin III of Murfreesboro. Mr. Mankin was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Mankin, and three sisters, Ora Mankin Carter Carmichael, Gertrude Connard and Jane Ellen Berry. Mr. Mankin was a member of First Baptist Church. He was operating superintendent with Murfreesboro Electric Department where he was employed for 32 years. In 1982 he was elected Rutherford County Executive and served until 1994. He was a retired famer and owner of Murfreesboro Livestock Market. Pallbearers will be Larry Brandon, Grigg Davenport, Mac Elrod, Buddy Oliver, Willard Richardson, James Rowland, Charles Smith, Troy Smith and Jack Weatherford. Memorials may be made to Alive Hospice or The American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Mankin.
