John Nathan Herrod, age 91, of Murfreesboro, died at home on Monday, June 13, 2011. He was a lifelong resident of Rutherford County, and the son of the late Wylie David & Ruth Kane Craddock Herrod. Funeral service will be 10:30 AM Thursday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Mark Carlton and Rev. Steve Odom will officiate. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Herrod is survived by his wife of 16 years Janet Hooper Herrod; Brother Wylie Ray (Phyllis) Herrod of Antioch, TN; sister Ella Mae (Norman) Mai of Heyburn, ID; brothers-in-law William (Peggy) Hooper of Clearwater, FL and Harris (Penny) Hooper; daughter-in-law Linda (John) Whitley Herrod Brown; granddaughter Janet (Mark) Herrod Carlton; grandson-in-law Nathan Robison; many nephews and nieces; and two beloved great-grandsons Nathan Carlton and Micah Robison. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Gladys Manning Herrod; sisters Thelma (Keele) Herrod McElroy and Sara (Elmer) Herrod Davenport; son John Charles Herrod; granddaughter Kathy Herrod Robison. Mr. Herrod was a graduate of Lascassas High School, and he served as a Sergeant in the U. S. Army 433rd Anti-Aircraft Battalion in the European theater of World War II from 1942 to 1945. Afterwards, he operated Browns Mill in Lascassas with his father and brother-in-law before working as maintenance supervisor for Rutherford County Schools until his retirement. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and woodworking. He lived with a spirit of tireless service and love to his friends, church, and family, always with a smile and a sense of humor, and was a member and elder emeritus of Central Christian Church.
