Obituary

Joe Douglas Powell 6/7/1944 – 9/23/2021, Resident of Murfreesboro, TN

After an acute illness on top of his chronic health issues, Joe passed peacefully at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Joe was born and raised in Atlanta, GA. As a result of his skill in multiple areas, he had a colorful job history, with the longest being a truck driver for 30 years, ultimately retiring from Rudy Farms Sausage after 10 years of service.  While in Atlanta, Joe was an active member of the Grant Park Masonic Lodge and the Yaarab Shrine Motor Corp.

He was one of seven children born to the late James and Essie Powell.  He was predeceased by 1 brother (Jackie), 3 sisters (Peggy, Betty & Joyce).  He is survived by 2 brothers (Bob & Jerry).  He was the beloved husband of Judy Powell for 40 years. Joe will forever be remembered by his sons Joe Jr (Tara) and Jimmy, grandchildren Catherine (Trevor) McKaig, Lindsay (Randy) Hall, Emily (Trevor) Mooney, 5 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, along with countless other friends and family whom were blessed to know him.

Joe loved collecting things (cars, guns, coins, tractors & other heavy equipment) watching sports (an avid Atlanta Braves & Georgia Bulldogs fan), golf, travel to exotic locations, using his collection of heavy equipment at the lake house on a variety of projects he thought his boys were completely capable of doing (despite their doubts sometimes), being with his family, and having fun with friends.

Joe touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service on Monday, September 27th at 1pm at Woodfin Funeral Chapels, 1488 Lascassas Pike, Murfreesboro, TN 37130, officiated by Krislyn Durham (First United Methodist Church Murfreesboro). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Shriners Hospital for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.

Visitation will be 5:00PM to 7:00PM Sunday September 26, 2021 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel www.woodfinchapel.com
