Joe U. Gillespie, age 90 of Smyrna, died Sunday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He was a native of Marshall County and a son of the late Roy and Annie Pearl Gillespie. He was also preceded by his wife Jewel Cawthon Gillespie, brothers John O. Gillespie, Chester White Gillespie, Jim S. Gillespie and a sister Mary Alice Hickerson. Survivors include a son Ron Gillespie and his wife Teresa of Murfreesboro; a daughter Suzanne Blackburn and her husband Bill of Decatur, AL; three grandchildren Christie Cannon and her husband Chuck of Rockvale, Kimberly Sprouse and her husband Will of Murfreesboro, Jesse Blackburn and his wife Tina of Alabama; four great grandchildren Abby Cannon, Kayla Blackburn, Parker and Josalyn Sprouse. Mr. Gillespie was a United States Army veteran and prior to being drafted he worked for the L&N Railroad in Nashville. He later retired from Ford Motor Co. after 45 years of service. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 until 8:00pm at Woodfin Chapel, Smyrna. Graveside services will be 2:00pm Tuesday at Thyatira Cemetery in Cannon County.
