Jane Mayes Batey, 88, of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2014. She was born and reared in the community of Farmington in Marshall County, Tennessee, the daughter of Joseph C. and Ruth Clayton Mayes. She graduated from Marshall County High School and David Lipscomb College, receiving a B.S. degree from George Peabody, with a Smith-Hughes certification in teaching. After graduation, Mrs. Batey taught Home Economics in 7th-12th grades in Robertson County's Cedar Hill School. Afterwards, she was a 4-H agent in Giles County (Pulaski) before becoming a Home Demonstration agent for Rutherford County. She was an excellent cook and an accomplished seamstress. In addition to being active in her children's activities, Mrs. Batey was a former member of the board of Oakland Historic Home, and also a member of the Woman's Club and The Tennessee SocietyColonial Dames XVII Century. Mrs. Batey was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, and was involved for many years in teaching classes for children and in various ladies' activities. On June 2, 1951, Jane married J. Ben Batey, Jr., who later became president of what was then the Murfreesboro Federal Savings and Loan Association. Mrs. Batey is survived by her husband, James Benjamin Batey, Jr.; her son Jim B. Batey, III (Dian) of Taft, TN; daughter Ruth (LaGard) Smith of Murfreesboro, TN; and daughter Margaret (Tim)Bowling of Murfreesboro, TN; her brother, Joe Mayes, Murfreesboro, TN; and her grandchildren, Charles Batey, Fayetteville,TN, Ben A. Batey, Raleigh, NC, William Batey, Chattanooga; and Thomas, Amy, and Morgan Bowling of Murfreesboro, TN. She was preceded in death by her brother William Mayes and her sister Carolyn Mayes Eaves. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, February 21st at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Saturday, February 22nd, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with F. LaGard Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery with Jane's grandsons serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
