Obituary

James Richard Reid, 87, of Wakefield, Massachusetts, Andover, Massachusetts and Murfreesboro, Tennessee passed away on May 21, 2014 at Adams Place in Murfreesboro from complications related to Parkinson's Disease. Mr. Reid was born in Wakefield, Massachusetts on December 1, 1926. The only child of Ruth Boudreau Reid and Fred Gavin Reid, he is survived by his wife Alice Lorraine (Allie Lou) Redfearn Reid, their daughters Nancy Reid Capobianco and husband Chip Capobianco, Martha Reid Riggle and husband Greg Riggle, and Betsy Reid Wells and husband Marshall Wells. He also leaves his grandchildren Travis Capobianco Andrews and husband Deacon Andrews, Reid Riggle, Kait Riggle, Parker Wells and Lindsey Wells. Mr. Reid attended Hebron Academy in Maine and graduated from Wakefield High School, Class of 1944. He served in the Army Air Force, then attended Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts where he was a student news reporter, and a member of the ski team and student coach. He enjoyed playing hockey at Northeastern, and retains a rink record from Matthews Arena of 6 goals scored in a single game. He was the President of Northeastern's Class of 1950. After graduation, he enjoyed building and racing sailboats with his future wife Allie Lou Redfearn. He and Allie Lou raised their three daughters in the town of Andover, Massachusetts where he also volunteered with the Buddy Werner Youth Ski League. Mr. Reid was deeply involved in snow skiing, in particular at Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire. He is considered one of the architects of Freestyle Skiing in the United States. He served as National Chairman of the US Ski Association, Freestyle Division, for many years. After retirement he continued to ski and play golf. He dedicated himself to his Murfreesboro community by volunteering at the Rutherford County Hospital for a grand total of 500 hours. Visitation for Mr. Reid will be on Sunday, May 25 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Woodfin Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro. A brief service will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.
