James Ervin
Goad
January 20, 1947 – September 12, 2025
James Ervin Goad, age 78, of Milton, Tennessee, passed away on September 12, 2025. He was native of Rutherford County. James was a member of Kelley's Chapel United Methodist Church and the son of the late George Washington Goad and Susie Cooper Goad. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Clarence Goad.
Beginning at the age of 14, James worked as a Veterinary Technician for Dr. C. E. Morgan, a calling that continued after he graduated from high school. He later entered the United States Army, where he trained at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, proudly serving his country as a Veterinary Technician. After completing his service, he returned home and continued his work as a Veterinary Technician before beginning a long career with Rutherford County Schools.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Lynn Bugg Goad; his son, James "Jimmy" Goad and wife Serenity; his daughter, Katie Smith and husband Tyler; grandchildren, Lillie Davis, James "Mason" Goad, and Aubrey Smith; and his sister, Reathie Winfrey.
For many years, James faithfully worked with Rutherford County Schools, most notably at Lascassas Elementary, where he retired after serving more than 20 years. He became known not only for his hard work, but also for his kindness and the way he cared for every student, teacher, and staff member he met. To many, he was more than an employee — he was a true friend.
James lived his life with generosity of spirit and a deep love for family and community. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a proud veteran, and a man who never met a stranger.
Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ben Esenfelder officiating. Burial will follow in Milton Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.
