December 31, 1923 – August 16, 2023
Ida Dunaway Read died August 16, 2023, at the age of 99. She leaves her soul to the Almighty God from whence it came and awaits the resurrection. Born December 31, 1923, she was the daughter of Howard Newman and Ola Gill Dunaway who predecease her. She was also predeceased by her husband William Eris Read, prominent educator in Rutherford Schools. Ida was preceded in death by her brother Willie Gill Dunaway, sisters Bertha D. Bruning, Susie D. Stafford, and Verna D. McCurdy.
A born again Christian, she was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church Murfreesboro where she sang in the choir, taught a Bible study class, and served in the church library.
Ida graduated from Central High School, Tennessee College for Women, and MTSU where she earned her Master's degree. As a librarian, she traveled with the Tennessee State Library and Archives Bookmobile Service. Later she joined the library faculty at MTSU and earned the rank of Assistant Professor. While there she was a founding member of the June Anderson Women's Center. She was a violinist and a longtime member of the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra.
Ida leaves a notable legacy for those who knew and loved her. Her sister, nieces and nephews will miss her greatly. She is survived by one sister, Martha D. Adams (Annandale, Virginia), fourteen nieces and nephews, several great nieces, and nephews, and great- great nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 2:00 PM Saturday, August 26, 2023, at First Baptist Church, 200 East Main Street with Pam Pilote officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with nephews serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, August 25, 2023, at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, and on Saturday, August 26, 2023, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church L.I.F.E. Campaign Fund, 200 East Main St. Murfreesboro, TN 37130.
The family would like to commend the staff at Adams Place Health Center for the good care given over the last six months. It is very much appreciated.
