Obituary

Gracie Olene Insel Burns, age 86 of Rockvale, entered into eternal peace at her home on Tuesday, September 15, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Burns was born on November 6, 1928 in Rutherford County to the late Walter Duncan and Goldie Jones Insel. She graduated valedictorian from Rockvale High School in 1947 and attended Draughons Business College in Nashville from 1947-1948. After college she worked as a cashier for Life of Georgia in Murfreesboro and then at Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperation in 1949 after marrying the love of her life, Norman O. Burns, on December 24, 1948. Together they raised four children while dedicating themselves to the Rockvale community in particular, the Rockvale Church of God. Mrs. Burns returned to work as a secretary at Samsonite where she retired in 1987 after 26 years of service. Through it all, her greatest contentment came in the simple pleasures of daily life on the farm. Mrs. Burns was a faithful follower of Christ and active member of the Women of the Church of God. She delighted and served in multiple ministries in her church. Her most recent role was caring for the babies and toddlers in the nursery, always remembering to bring along Goldfish crackers to share with them. She possessed a kind and gentle soul, a loving generous heart, and humbly dedicated her time and energy to serving others. Because she was a lifelong learner, Mrs. Burns was a voracious reader, choosing titles that spanned a variety of themes in her quest for knowledge. Her greatest joy, however, was spending time with and feeding her family. She will be affectionately remembered for her warm smile and the sweet twinkle in her eye. We will miss her dearly. Mrs. Burns was predeceased by her parents; four sisters, Wenzola Gould, Hazel Gillespie, Artye Clark and Deanie Smith; brother Herbert Insel. Mrs. Burns is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years and sweetheart of 70 years, Norman Burns; one daughter, Gwen Williams and her husband Michael of Murfreesboro, three sons, Ron Burns of Miami, Florida, Lynn Burns and his wife Kathy of Lawrenceburg and Norman Burns II and his wife Sandy of Richmond Virginia; brother Bill (and the late Beth) Insel of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Brian Williams and his wife Amy, Chad Williams, Abby Wilson and her husband Spencer, Jake Burns, Ryan Burns and his wife Laura and Caleb Burns, Abigail Burns, Duncan Burns, Hannah Burns, Lynsey Burns and Landon Burns; four great-grandchildren Jesse, Gracie, Abby and Sadie; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews whom she adored. The Burns family would like to offer its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Darren Mullins, the Tennessee Oncology nurses and staff, and the special professionals with Alive Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they provided for Olene during her valiant battle with cancer. Visitation with the family will be held from 4:00pm until 8:00pm Thursday September 17, 2015 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Friday September 18, 2015 at 11:00am at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with son- in- law Michael Williams officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers and granddaughters along with great-grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow at the Burns Family Cemetery in Rockvale, Tennessee. The Burns family request that memorial donations may be made to the Rockvale Church of God Vision Fund, 7780 Jackson Ridge Road, Rockvale, Tennessee 37153 or Alive Hospice, 1639 Medical Center Parkway, Suite 202, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 37129 in memory of Gracie Olene Burns.
