Obituary

Gladys Wey Kopf, age 93, died on October 19, 2012 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee surrounded by loving family members.

Gladys was born in Newark, NJ on September 12, 1913, the youngest of four children of Emil Wey and Hermine Theissinger Wey. She grew up in Maplewood, graduated from Maplewood High School at the age of 16, and attended art school in West Orange where she perfected her talent in oil painting water colors, chalk, and pen and ink drawings. Unable to find work as an artist during the late depression years, Gladys began her retail sales career at Hahne's Department store in Newark. She married George E. Kopf on January 16, 1942 in the Prospect Presbyterian Church in Maplewood. Gladys relocated several times during World War II while George was in military service in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war Gladys and George purchased a home in Cranford where they lived for many years and were active in community activities. Gladys loved ocean swimming and the beach at their summer home in Ocean Beach, NJ.

For many years, Gladys worked in Scher's Drug Store in Cranford as a cosmetician and window dresser, decorating the store window displays for the changing seasons. In 1989, Gladys and George moved to Holiday City in Toms River, NJ. After George's death in 1996, Gladys moved to Convent Station, NJ and later to Adams Place in Murfreesboro.

Gladys is survived by her son, Rodger C. Kopf and his wife Lois of Convent Station; her daughter, Janis Kopf Conklin and her husband John of Murrieta, California; her granddaughter, Jennifer Kopf West and her husband Michael; her great granddaughter, Heather Ruby West of Murfreesboro. She is also survived by nieces, Rhelda Van Duyn Losco, Arlene Crowell Bilyeu and Lois Kopf Whittom; nephews, William Van Duyn, John Van Duyn, Sam Van Duyn and Glenn K. Wey.

Gladys was predeceased by her husband, George E. Kopf; sisters, Ruth Van Duyn and Francis Crowell; brother Herman Wey; niece, Ginger Kopf Weinstein.

A memorial service is planned in New Jersey at a later date.
