Obituary

Geraldine Gerry Smotherman James, age 87, of Murfreesboro, passed away on August 11, 2011 at Adams Place following a short illness. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Lillard Houston and Odell Downum Smotherman of the Salem Community. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Guy James, Jr., who died in 2009; a sister, Lucille Lea of Jefferson City, Tennessee; and a brother, William Larry Smotherman, of Murfreesboro. Mrs. James is survived by three children, Guy James III, Gwendolyn Burt, and Gary Michael James, all of Murfreesboro; three grandchildren, Rebecca James (Greg) Horton of Knoxville; Frank Burt, Jr., and Matthew James, both of Murfreesboro. She is also survived by two great grandchildren, Lily Horton and Alex Guy Horton of Knoxville; three nieces, and many cherished friends. Gerry attended Rockvale School and graduated from Murfreesboro Central High School where she was an outstanding basketball player. Throughout her life, she was well known for her culinary skills and hosted many wonderful dinners and joyous occasions for her family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling, golfing, and playing bridge. She was a member of the North Minister Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday August 14, 2011 at Woodfin Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Perry Muse officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
