Obituary

GALE JEFFERSON CLARK, age 67 of Murfreesboro, Tennessee died Sunday at Vanderbilt Hospital. He was born in Memphis, Tennessee and was the son of the late John Jefferson & Alma Robertson Clark. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Alee Burrow Clark of Murfreesboro; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 pm Thursday at First United Methodist Church with Tommy Perkins, Jon Bell, and Dr. David Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation with the family 4-8 pm Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel Dr. Clark was Professor Emeritus of the MTSU Chemistry Dept having taught from 1969-2006. He was an active participant in the development of the new science building at MTSU. For three summers, he held a faculty appointment at Vanderbilt University in the Chemistry Dept. He was active through out his career in service to the profession, the university, and the college as well as the Chemistry Dept. He served as a peer reviewer for NIH and for The Analyst. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, AAUP, Sigma Xi, and served as treasurer and vice president of the local Sigma Xi. He served on several university committees including the Graduate Council, the University Research Committee, and the University Research Ethics Committee, and was a long term member of the Environmental Science and Technology committee in the college of Basic and Applied Sciences. At the department level Dr. Clark was chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and was also given the responsibility for planning the schedule of classes for upcoming semesters. In collaboration with Dr. Linda Wilson, he edited and published the departments first newsletter. For seven years they distributed over 1500 copies of this publication per year to departmental alumni and the wider university community. Dr. Clark received his Bachelor of Arts from Hendrix College and his PhD. From Vanderbilt University. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church with special involvement in the choir. He was a participant in the Upper Room Walk to Emmaus and was a Board Member of Journey Home. Active pallbearers will be Charles Smith, Bill Grasty, Robin Robertson, Dewey Smith, Jay Sanders and Randy Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Friends, Students, Faculty and Staff Members of the MTSU Chemistry Dept. Memorials in honor of Dr. Clark may be made to the music fund or the building fund at First United Methodist Church, Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas or the MTSU Foundation Gale Clark Fund P. O.
