Obituary

Edgar Byrd McClung LTC (ret) Edgar Byrd McClung (Eddie Byrd), born June 23, 1930, died peacefully at home on February 20, 2012. Born in South Charleston, West Virginia, Ed graduated from Rupert High School in 1948. He went on to graduate from West Point Military Academy, Class of 1952, and was commissioned into the Army following graduation. He received his MBA from Babson Institute in 1961. Ed was married to Dorothy Lewis on June 14, 1952. They enjoyed a wonderful marriage of nearly 60 years, raising 3 children. The family had more than the usual variety of assignments over the years, a total of 21 moves. The family enjoyed fascinating family tours in Germany, Taiwan, and all over the USA. Ed also served unaccompanied tours in Thailand and Korea. His final tour was Germany, followed by retirement on May 31, 1973. Ed enjoyed a second career in the auto industry, beginning with 7 years with Ford Motor Company in Assembly Process Engineering in Michigan. In 1985 Ed and Dotty moved to Murfreesboro where Ed spent 12 years with Nissan. After retiring from Nissan, he spent a short time running a farm raising Beefalo cattle. He and his wife, Dorothy, have remained very active in St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Murfreesboro. Among his passions were wood working, singing with the choir, playing the harmonica and guitar, and taking care of his beloved wife. He is survived by his wife Dorothy; 3 children, Stephen (Tonya) McClung, Carol (Larry) Sparrow and Michael; two lovely granddaughters, Kelsey Sparrow and Brittany McClung; and one great granddaughter, Harlie Daae McClung. Along with his family he held in his heart his close-knit church family and beloved friends, as well as the love of his life, Dorothy. Celebration of life service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, 315 East Main Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37130. Reverend Gene Wise and Reverend James K. Polk Van Zandt will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Music ministry of St. Pauls Episcopal Church, or The American Cancer Society.
