November 1, 1948 – December 18, 2016
Douglas Brock Young, age 68, a life-long resident of Murfreesboro Tennessee died on December 18, 2016. He was born at Rutherford Hospital on November 1, 1948 and was the son of the late Andrew Martin Young and Mollie Brock Young. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan Hanson Young; his children, Julie Young Clark and her husband Jerry, Andrew Young and his wife Rebecca, and Matthew Young and his fiancé Sarah Ferry all of Murfreesboro. He is also survived by his brother, Reuel Young; sisters, Sue Young Kersey and Marilyn Young Beachboard; father-in-law, George Hanson; brother-in-law, Neil Hanson and his wife Velma; five precious granddaughters, Catherine and Anna Clark, Reecely and Ellie Young, and Maysen Moore; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Mr. Young began his education at Hobgood Elementary and went on to Central High School where he served as senior class vice president. He was a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in Sociology. While at MTSU, he was a charter member of the Delta Lambda chapter of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was commissioned as a 2nd LT in the United States Army and served for two years in military intelligence. He was an owner and store manager of City Tile and Floor Covering.
Mr. Young was active in scouting and earned the rank of Life and was recognized as the Murfreesboro Good Scout Award recipient earlier this year. He was also a life-long member and ruling elder of First Presbyterian Church. Doug has made a huge impact in shaping our community as he is a graduate of Leadership Rutherford, the Citizens' Police Academy, and the Citizens' Fire Academy. Doug also served on the Planning Commission and is currently the vice chair. Since 2002, he was elected Murfreesboro City Council and elected as the Murfreesboro Vice Mayor in 2014. Doug also served on the Regional Transportation Authority board and was a member of the Murfreesboro Jaycees.
Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 11:00am at First Presbyterian Church. Dr. John Hinkle and The Reverend Bobby Harding will officiate. Honorary pall bearers will be Bob Lamb, Bart Gordon, Mark Pirtle, Tommy Bragg, Bart Walker, Ben McFarlin, John Harney, Newton Harris, Murfreesboro City officials, and the College of Elders from First Presbyterian Church.
