Obituary

Dorothy (Dot), age 89, of Smyrna, TN, formerly of Memphis, TN, passed away June 27, 2013. Born May 20, 1924 in Jackson, TN to the late Cecil Lee Cain and Elizabeth Pruitt Cain. Preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Oscar William May; by her daughter, Annette May Keith; her son-in-law, Lonnie Smith; her great grandson Troy May; sisters Jeanette Pounders, Mary Nell Upshaw and brother, Erban Cain. Survived by daughters, Cherie May Smith Maynard (Bob), Yvonne May Salmon (Agar), son, Oscar William May, Jr. (Cathy). Also 16 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Her sisters, Catherine McCarley and Westelle Sweeney of Memphis, Billie McCollum Turner of Franklin, TN and Cecile Cain of New York City ; and her brothers, Robert L. Cain of Memphis and Curtis Cain of Savannah, TN. Dorothy grew up in Memphis, went to Tech High School, and graduated from University of Memphis with a fine arts degree. She was an accomplished artist, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Dorothy compiled an amazing documentation of her life from the time she was a child, including every letter from the correspondence between herself and her husband while he served in the Second World War. The material also includes her photography, as well as numerous scrapbooks and photo albums, which her family will cherish for many years to come. Dorothy spent much of the last ten years of her life working on her memoirs. Dorothy was a member of The Church of the River in Memphis, TN for over 40 years and a member of the Germantown Art League in Germantown, TN when she resided in Memphis. The family would like to thank the caregivers of Waterford Assisted Living of Smyrna, TN for the extraordinary, loving care they provided for the last 3 years. We would also like to thank Gentiva Hospice in Nashville, for their care of the past few months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Church of the River, Memphis TN, the Germantown Art League , Germantown, TN or charity of your choice. Memorial services to be held at the Church of the River at 292 Virginia Ave W in Memphis, TN, Reverend Burton D. Carley, minister, on July 6, 2013 at 11:00 am.
