Dorothea “Dot”
Gardner Wilks,
January 7, 1932 – September 29, 2025
Dorothea "Dot" Gardner Wilks, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sept. 29, in Murfreesboro, TN, at the age of 93. She was the unwavering heart of her family and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
Born in Golden, MS, on January 7, 1932, to the late Samuel F. Gardner and Lema Gatlin Gardner, Dot grew up learning the importance of hard work and service to others. She was married to Max Wilks for almost 43 years until his death in 1994. She and Max provided a loving and supportive home for their two girls, all while they both worked full-time jobs. Dot was a master of the domestic arts, and her kitchen was the hub of family life. She prepared legendary Southern dishes, and no one left her home without a full belly and a warm heart. Over the years, Dot created beautiful, intricate quilts and needlework that will be cherished by family for generations to come. She was a wonderful, devoted mother who selflessly served her family, always putting their needs before her own, and created a home filled with love, laughter, and support.
Though family was her first priority, Dot's influence extended to so many others. A bright and personable lady, she served as a legal secretary for various law firms, and she particularly enjoyed her years as Executive Assistant in the Trust Dept. of First National Bank in Decatur, AL, until her retirement. Wherever she lived, Dot maintained a network of cherished friends through her church and community. Delicious meals and spirited card games with dear friends from Brentwood Hills Church of Christ were some of her favorite times!
Above all else, Dot was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Her love for others was a direct reflection of Christ's immeasurable love for her, and she saw her life as a journey to her home with Him.
Dot is survived by daughters Patsi Ann Wilks Flatt (Steve) and Margaret Lynn Wilks Vawter (Bob). She is also survived by five grandchildren – Ethan Gardner Flatt (Katy), Lee Michael Flatt (Sarah), Rachel Wilks Flatt Fox (Ted), Clare Wilks Vawter Tubre (Oran), and Weston Benjamin Vawter (Jennifer). In addition, she is survived by five great-grandchildren.
A private burial will be held in Dot's hometown of Ft. Payne, AL , for family.
