Obituary

DON S. ANDERSON, age 71, of Murfreesboro died Dec. 23, 2009 at home. Mr. Anderson was a native of Lake Co., TN and was the son of the late Ernest and Troy Brisentine Anderson. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday Jan. 9, 2010 at First Baptist Church. Dr. Michael Smith will officiate. There will be a visitation following the service in the church fellowship hall. Mr. Anderson is survived by his wife, Beverly Hammock Anderson; son and daughter in law, Eric and Carla Anderson of Murfreesboro; daughter, Katharine Jungkind of Brighton, TN; sister, Gail Hanks of Sarah, MS; three grandchildren, Phoebe , Hope, and Faith Anderson. Don was a graduate of the University of Tennessee-Martin. While a student there, he was editor of his senior yearbook and president of the Baptist Student Union. He was a Baptist student summer missionary to the Sioux Indian Reservation at Pine Ridge, South Dakota. He received his masters degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. He began his teaching career at Oak Ridge High School in 1961. In 1966, he was given a leave of absence to accept a position with the U.S. State Department to begin a new science/math program at the American School in Singapore. Upon his return to Oak Ridge he resumed his teaching at Oak Ridge High School. He was active in the educators association for many years at the local, state, and national levels. While at Oak Ridge High School he was a Key Club Sponsor as well as a sponsor of the girls soccer program before its formation as a varsity team. He was an active supporter of the football and basketball programs for many years. His hobbies were gardening, philanthropic organizations such as the Oak Ridge Boys Club, Southern Poverty Law Center, Native American Relief Funds, and the Child Advocacy Center of Rutherford County. He was a talented artist, creating handcrafted jewelry. Memorials in memory of Mr. Anderson may be made to the Child Advocacy Centers of Rutherford and Williamson Counties: Rutherford Co.
