Obituary

Deanie Insel Smith, age 79, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at her home with her devoted husband and loving family surrounding her. The victory was hers after a lengthy, valiant battle with Parkinson's disease. She faced this final battle with the same courage, fierce determination, and dignity that characterized her entire life. Mrs. Smith was a native of Rutherford County, TN; born the youngest of seven children to Walter Duncan and Goldie Jones Insel. She was a member of Smyrna First Baptist Church, and the MTSU Dames Club. She was preceded by her parents; infant son James Bragg; sisters Wenzola Gould, Hazel Gillespie, and Artye Clark. Survivors include her husband, Bobby J. Smith; her sons Bobby (Glynis) Bragg of Murfreesboro, Walter David (Brenda) Bragg of Wartrace; and Kevin (Rita) Bragg of Wendell, NC; step-children Ken (Karen) Smith of Jacksonville, FL, and Vivian (Paul) Thompson of Mt. Juliet; sister Olene (Norman) Burns of Rockvale; brothers Bill (and the late Beth) Insel of Murfreesboro, and Herbert (Johnnie) Insel of Tullahoma; fourteen Grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith retired from MTSU in 2001, serving as a mainstay in the Office of Academic Affairs for over 30 years. She also worked a number of years in the legal field, and in the insurance office of Tommy Martin. Always the consummate professional, she possessed an articulate, elegant style in all her business endeavors. She was a devoted wife to Bobby for over 25 years, a loving mother to her sons, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the "baby" sister to her sisters and brothers, and a thoughtful, generous and compassionate soul to countless friends, nieces, nephews, and students. Her energy was tireless, her faith strong, and her love unconditional. You were truly blessed if Deanie ever crossed your path. Funeral services will be 11:00am, Saturday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Reverends W.D. Thomason and Jimmy Gray will officiate. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 4:00 until 7:00 pm Friday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Memorials may be made to Gentiva Hospice Foundation in memory of Mrs. Smith. An online guestbook is available for Mrs. Smith at www.woodfinchapel.com
